Boston Red Sox wild-card lead extends to four games – MLB Update
Boston Red Sox has managed to widen their wild-card lead to four games after overpowering the Tampa Bay Rays 4-3 in the second outing of the series at Fenway Park in Boston.
The Red Sox had received a humiliating 9-2 defeat in the first outing of the season. It was their sixth straight loss to the Rays and they were in severe need to win back their confidence against the Rays. However, this was a much-needed win that has created
some relief in their bullpen.
"It's a good night, yeah," said Red Sox manager Terry Francona. "We beat a good team. A team that's kind of given us fits. But we've got to come back tomorrow and get back after them. Just kind of try to keep an even keel and play good baseball."
Losing six games against the Rays and the 11th in the last 14 outings, surrounded the entire night with tension.
"As tough as the last 10 days have been, playing in this atmosphere, this is I think why I think they work all winter," Francona said. "This is exciting. I was nervous as could be. You can't [explain] that feeling.”
Francona had received harsh words this month and was looking to remove all the allegations. This win has amazed him as the Red Sox had serious problems against the Rays for the last three series. However, he stated that due to the uncertainty of the game,
you never know when the team is going to get a win.
Red Sox are now at the top of the wild-card race with 87 wins while Texas Rangers are chasing them with 86 wins followed by Tampa Bay Rays at 83 and Los Angeles Angels at 82.
Seattle Mariners shattered the Rangers’ confidence with a 4-0 win, as the Angels have lost to Baltimore Orioles. Both Rangers and Angels have to make a real comeback if they want to stay in the race. Angels has shown the ability to retaliate in pressure
situations.
New York Yankees are leading the American League with 90 wins but their close defeat by Toronto Blue Jays has created serious concerns in their bullpen. Detroit Tigers on the other hand, are moving positively winning 13 of their last 15 games in this month.
