Boston Red Sox win an emphatic 5-3 victory over Oakland Athletics – MLB Update
Boston Red Sox put in a good performance to defeat Oakland Athletics 5-3 at O.co Coliseum, Oakland on Wednesday, April 20.
The game began with Gonzalez pitching for Oakland. Gonzalez, it is worth mentioning, was playing this game after having pitched 17 scoreless innings straight, thereby developing a pressure marked by intensity. He maintained it well up until the first inning
of this game where none of Boston’s batters could play him. Just when the Red Sox were scoreless in the first inning, Clay Buchholz gave up a hit and a run scored by none other than Crisp, as he homered to right to make it a 1-0 lead for the Athletics.
The Red Sox otherwise struggling Kevin Youkilis and Jed Lowrie went forcefully against unrivalled Gio Gonzalez to pave the way for victory. The magnificent take on their rivals bore fruit by thrashing Oakland.
Just when the Red Sox seemed to have established an insurmountable lead in the game, Athletics’ Coco Crisp took a one-out RBI single, bringing momentary worry, if not excessive displeasure for Boston and their fans. However, Bobby Jenks compensated it by
sending Daric Barton home with an unplayable strike.
Carl Crawford, who has barely been able to exhibit the characteristic performance so far, finally charged Gonzalez. Crawford singled to center where Youkilis scored, levelling the score 1-1. Gonzalez was subject to two massive hits in the fourth inning in
which Youkilis homered to left centre to make it a 2-1 lead for Boston.
While Oakland was exerting to notch up something on Buchholz’s fastballs, Gonzalez once again fell flat. This time it was Jed Lowrie in the sixth inning that homered to left where Adrian Gonzalez scored, making it 4-1 for Boston.
Oakland did not spare any chance to make the game interesting. This they did in the eighth inning when they had almost seemed to be in a position to make a come-back in the match. Crisp singled to right where Landon Powell scored on Bobby Jenks’ fastball.
The inning saw three hits. On 5-2 in the last inning, Oakland tried their last attempt to do something. However, Jonathan Papelbon only gave up a run when Powell singled to right centre where Hideki Matsui got the third run for the Athletics. However, Oakland
was contained there by Papelbon and striking a 5-3 victory for Boston Red Sox.
