Boston Red Sox wipe the floor with Seattle Mariners, win 4th straight game
The fans were not happy with their home team as they crashed out of the game for the 3rd time in the series against the Boston Red Sox. The 21,936 fans in the stands of the Safeco Field made their concern known as the Seattle Mariners bowed out
of the contest, courtesy a 5 – 1 score line. The hosts did start well but due to some good pitching from Clay Bucholz, the side went down reeling. This obviously, wasn’t expected as the visitors have been thriving on good form with 4 wins now under their belt.
Bucholz got an early scare and it was Russell Branyan who made that impact early on. The Red Sox were the first ones to head the batting turn but produced nothing. That’s when the Mariners came onto the plate to convert early on. It was the bottom 1st
and two men were out already. Branyan came in and out of nowhere to produce a 392-foot, earth shattering, home run that boomed to the right. The hit gave Seattle their lead against the visitors. It was long before Clay got his second scare of the night. The
hosts made another attempt at scoring in the bottom 2nd and bases were loaded with hitters. Michael Saunders was on the plate and Casey Kotchman occupied the third base. It took Victor Martinez’s superb throw to Adrian Beltre to get Casey out.
Bucholz later recalled on how the incident panned out for him, "you got two great players, one behind the plate and one playing third base. When they're on the same page and they can make things happen like that, all that does for a team is bring them up
and want to get in the dugout and makes everyone want to get a hit".
Boston eventually replied through Adrian Beltre, who homered to the left, scaling a distance of 416-feet in the top 4th. That hit was all it took to level the playing field, setting up the game for an epic finale as both ball clubs were at it
for personal goals. The game was not over yet and the teams were deadlocked for a good time before the sides drifted apart.
This time it was the Red Sox who made their way ahead in the game in the top 6th. David Oritz was the man to convert the lead for the team as he began his bid with a double to the deep centre. The massive hitter moved on to third base when Beltre
provided the room with a fly out to the centre. Daniel Nava then made his way to the first base when second baseman, Chone Figgins made an erroneous throw. Oritz ran home with all the commotion going on elsewhere.
Red Sox were 2 – 1 up and the top 7th brought another run to the visitors as Marco Scutaro and Ryan Kalish made their presence known in the fixture. Scutaro made his way to the first base with a single to the centre. Kalish smashed a ground rule
double to the deep right and got himself on the second base. Martinez drove in the RBI (Runs Batted In) double when he doubled to the right and got both base occupants to the finish line.
With 4 points in the bag, Boston went ahead further. This time the run came in the top 8th as the game was closing out for an expected win to the visitors. Scutaro was responsible for the brace and he began his innings with a walk to the first.
He stole the second when Kalish came on to the plate to bat. Ryan smashed a triple to the right and got Scutaro to run home for the 5th Red Sox run of the day.
The game concluded with Boston 5 – Seattle 1. Much of the victory was owed to Clay Bucholz, who ended the night with 109 pitches in his 7 innings of play. Walking away with his 16th win of the night, the ball thrower allowed just 4 hits and 1
run in the duration of his time on the mound. Mariners’ ace man, David Pauley was unlucky. He gave away 6 hits and 2 runs in his 97 pitches. What was missing was some composure in the batting line up and the game expectedly concluded with the Red Sox in the
lead, sweeping the hosts in the 3 game series and leading them to a 7 straight loss.
