Boston Red Sox’s David Ortiz uncomfortable over one-year option
Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz is uncomfortable with the club picking up a one-year option on his contract worth $12.5 million.
Ortiz states that he would be more interested in a long-term deal that would keep him with the club for an extended period of time.
The 34-year-old went through another up-and-down season, featuring another depressing slump in the month of April.
Nevertheless, Ortiz once again seemed to find his stroke as the year progressed and finished off the season with impressive numbers.
Ortiz stated that he is tired of dealing with constant questions and criticism and believes that a one-year extension will only generate more questions surrounding his future.
"I just want to cut out all the c**p and go back to the guy I was before, a happy guy who doesn’t have to be answering questions that have nothing to do with anything but controversy. I just want to be able to play baseball and have fun, like I used to.
That’s where I came back to not wanting just one year, because I know it’s going to be just the same thing."
The Red Sox cannot exercise Ortiz’s option until three days after the World Series comes to an end, so the slugger will have to sit tight until that time.
Nevertheless, Ortiz has made it clear that he wants to remain with the Boston Red Sox, but would prefer a contract extension.
"To tell you the truth, like everybody knows, I want to be back and I want to be here for a long period of time. I’m just a little worn out because of the negativity that I’ve dealt with the last few years. I don’t think there’s any baseball player that
can deal with all the distractions that I deal with and play baseball. It’s hard. I’m not a superhero. I’m just another human being, like everyone else. I’ve got feelings."
In 2010, Ortiz managed a .270 batting-average, 32 home runs and 102 RBIs.
