Boston Red Sox’s Jason Varitek decides to retire – MLB News
According to a leading sports website, Boston Red Sox’s Jason Varitek has decided to retire from Major League Baseball. After playing 15 big league seasons with the Red Sox, the striker is finally set to announce his retirement on Thursday. A source very
familiar with the decision broke the news on Monday.
Variek is expected to announce his retirement officially on Thursday at Boston’s Spring Training camp. Since making his MLB debut, the hard hitting Varitek has produced some memorable performances for the Red Sox. He was drafted in 1994 as a first round
pick. Spending his entire MLB career with the Red Sox, he is a very respectable figure among the fans.
With two World Series titles, three All Star team appearances and four no hitters, he carved an All Star career for himself. In addition his phenomenal hitting ability, the guy possesses great team work skills. He is known for his warm behaviour with his
team mates, coaches and the managers. With 1488 games behind his plate, he holds the record for most games caught. His career batting average of .256 is decent. With 193 home runs and 757 RBI’s, he has helped his team snatch unforgettable wins in MLB.
“I don’t think you’re going to find anybody in there who has played with him who says they’re not going to miss him,” Red Sox ace Josh Beckett said last week.
“He was one of the greatest players in this organization, in my opinion,” Shoppach, who got his start in Boston in 2005, he added. “I think that everybody learned from him. The brief time that I was with him years ago, there are still some things that I
do in my everyday routine and my preparation that you know can’t help but rub off from him.”
Making the most of available opportunities, he posted his career best season in 2003. His .273 with 25 home runs and 85 RBI’s during that season made him a hero among Red Sox fans. However, it wasn’t just numbers Varitek was good at. He helped the youngsters
in Boston Red Sox’s minor league system whenever he had an opportunity to do so.
