  2. Easy, hook your boat and trailer to the back of your pickup, have someone drive you on the road of your choice, you ride in the boat, however, be careful, there are laws that will be broken by you riding in the boat.

  3. Depending on the size of your boat and its draft, it might actually be shorter to go to New York first and up the Hudson river to the Erie Barge Canal near Albany.  Length isn't so much an issue in the canal but you don't want anymore than about 6' of draft (less is better). You can take it all the way to Lake Erie where you can proceed through Lakes Erie, Huron and Michigan to Chicago.

  4. I'm sure there is a nautical mapquest on the net somewhere.

The St Lawrence River is 1,197 km (744 mi)

Lake Ontario is 193 mi (311 km)

Lake Erie is 241 mi (388 km)

St Clair river is 39 miles (64 km)

Lake Huron is 206 mi (332 km)

Lake Michiga is 307 miles (494 km) long

Dont forget to add the distance from Boston to the mouth of the St Lawrence river.

Thats a long boat trip!  You will need a big boat for that trip.
