Bostons Angel out of Cheltenham Gold Cup
Bostons Angel is doubtful for the Betfred Cheltenham Gold Cup, as his connections are likely to withdraw his name from the next month’s mega event.
This suggestion came in the wake of Bostons Angel’s poor performance in the Grade 1 Hennessy Gold Cup, taken place at Leopardstown on Sunday, February 12, 2012.
The eight-year-old was sent as the 3 to 1 second favourite, but could only finish sixth in a field of seven runners. Ridden by R. M. Power, the colt started off well, and was prominent in the early stages of the race.
However, he failed to carry forward his advantage, losing his lead after a few initial fences. Even at the final moments, he was unable to come up with something special, letting his rivals surpass him comfortably. As a result, only second last place
went to Mrs John Harrington’s trainee.
While Bostons Angel was displaying an ordinary show that day, Quel Esprit secured first place. The 5 to 4 betting favourite led the race from the fourth hurdle, and retained his dominance until he was home free.
Roberto Goldback kept the eventual winner under pressure right through the 3 mile distance, but W. P. Mullins’ French horse never loosened his grip.
Quel Esprit grabbed the top spot by a couple of lengths, followed by Roberto Goldback and Treacle at second and third position. respectively.
Bostons Angel’s terrible performance was a huge setback for his fans. The trainer, Jessica Harrington was not reluctant to admit that last year’s RSA Chase winner was a bit rusty on the track.
She also hinted Bostons Angel’s omission from the Gold Cup, and cited Bobbyjo Chase, and Ladbrokes.com Irish Grand National as his potential entries.
“Bostons Angel was fine this morning but it's unlikely that he will run in the Gold Cup. You could say that the Hennessy was his first real race this season and he just ran a bit rusty,” Jessica said.
She continued: "We'll look at running him in the Bobbyjo Chase at Fairyhouse on February 25 and he could be a horse for the Ladbrokes.com Irish Grand National."
Bostons Angel was given the odds of 50 to 1 by bet365 for next month’s big event. So far in his career, the Irish challenger has sealed three wins over hurdles.
