    Interphase encompasses all of the parts of the cell cycle outside of mitosis and meiosis. In particular, the synthesis or S phase where all chromosomal DNA is replicated is part of interphase. Cellular checkpoints for the completion of DNA duplication are made before the cell commits to either mitosis or meiosis.

    Remember: G1-->S-->G2-->M

    Prophase does not IMMEDIATELY follow the duplication of DNA. G2 (Gap 2) is where the cell makes sure its ready to enter mitosis or meiosis.
