so our 7 month old is eating some solids but I know he still needs his formula until a year old, my question is, I don't want a BIG baby with a bottle (as in over a year old with a bottle) so I would like to start him using a cup or something soon..how do I get this started? He can sip out of our cups good but do you give him formula like that and give him 8 oz of formula in a cup? or how do I go about doing this? Do I start him with a little formula in a cup?... Any suggestions would be great! Thank you

  1. Use the cup to give him any fluids other than formula.  Keep usingthe bottles for the formula.  You still have many months until you have to think about taking him away from the bottle.

When he is about 11 months old, start mixing his bottles with 1/4 whole milk and 3/4 formula.  Do that for a week and then do half and half.  The following week do 3/4 whole milk and 1/4 formula.  Make sure he is going to drink the milk before you take him off the formula.  When you are sure he's ready to go on milk only, then start using the sippy cup instead of the bottle.

I took the bottle away  from my daughter at 13 months.  It was no problem.  When my can of formula was gone, that was the end of the bottles.

Now that I look back, I feel like I took the bottle away too soon.  One year is still very young... they are still babies.

  2. i am going to guess that formula is fine in a cup. Since my kids are boob babies I would just give them juice and water in their cups. L got to the point where he didn't want the boob but would drink breast milk from his "big boy" cup. So yeah formula is cool. Just let him practice and soon he will have the hang of it. Although I wouldn't care what any one said. If he prefers the bottle then go for it.

  3. yes, give him a little formula in a cup. top it up if he wants more.

as he eats more, remember to reduce the formula

  4. When my nephew was around 7 months  his mom started giving him a cup, she would put just some of his formula in it at a time and he eventually got to the point of wanting all of his formula in his cup.

He's a year old now and hasn't been on a bottle since he was around 10 months old.

  5. I started my son on a NUK sippy cup off and on when he was 6-7 months old ... he would play with it and chew on the spout and also he would bring it up to his mouth but didn't get the concept of turning it up to get the juice out... we kept working with him and by 10 months he only took one bottle at night and was drinking juice and formula from his sippy cup all day... he will be one in 8 days and he doesn't want his bottle at all anymore!!

  6. I gave my daughter formula in a cup..i just measured it in a bottle then dumped it in the cup. she still uses a bottle at night with water when she goes to bed though and she is 13 months

  7. Have him practice with small amounts of water.  Once he gets the hang of picking up the cup and drinking on his own, give him small amounts of formula and top it off as he goes.
