Question:

Bottle cleaning question...?

I accidentally let my son's bottles sit for a while without rinsing them, and now the nipples kind of smell. I've tried washing them really well, and putting them into the dishwasher, but they still have a bit of the smell left on them. I tried boiling them too and though that worked a little better, they still smell...any suggestions as to how to get them totally clean?

  1. sounds like you cleaned them as much as they can be cleaned.

if you are not liking it, then replace the nipples.

  2. Boiling them will get rid of any bacteria that the sour milk would have left. I have done this before too and I just boiled them. The smell is  more than likely just the rubber itself. I wouldn't worry, if you boiled then they will be safe for your little one.

  3. let them sit in a bowl of hot water with a cap full of bleach for about half an hour then run through th dishwasher again

  4. Try soaking them for  a hour or soooo in vinegar water or else water with baking soda..  These  are safe and natural ways to remove odors.  After the vinegar soak or the baking soda soak...... then soak in hot soapy water.   Rinse VERY well.......  and they should smell much better and be sterile.  If this doesn't work..... which it should...... you may need to just throw them out and buy new ones.

  5. they have developed a speacial bottle-cleaning soap that works pretty well. Honestly, I can't think of the name of it off the top of my head, but it does work and can be bought at almost any grocery store and department store like wal-mart

  6. hot hot soapy water scrub with a bottle brush or cloth, inside and out, rinse with even hotter water if you can.

  7. white vinegar should take the smell right out...if that doesn't do the trick, soak them in some baking soda and warm water (just make sure you rinsed all the vinegar off really well first) if that doesn't work, you might want to just buy new ones...

  8. Try a quick bleach bath then put them back in the dishwasher.  If that doesn't do it, just throw them out and get new ones.

  9. well after all that they still smell?? go buy new ones..or i dunno if you have heard of the bpa free bottles that they sell now? bpa is in the plastic of the bottles and babies r us will let you return your old bottle for brand new bpa free bottle..at no chrge! bring ur old ones in and get new ones for free!

  10. Honestly, I would just throw them away.  I always kept an extra pack of nipples on hand just in case something like happened.  I always tried washing them by hand with a nipple brush then put them in the dishwasher.  If that didnt work, they went in the trash.

EDIT: Do NOT soak your babies bottle nipples in bleach.. the vinegar and water mixture will work just as good and is safer for you child.  Vinegar is a great cleaner, and can be used in the place of bleach.

  11. if you have done all that then they are clean. boiling bottles is the best way to clean them. bottles sart sinking after they have been used so much.
