Question:

Bougainvillea in Fresno California winter?

It's summer and my Bougainvillea's are growing wild. They are such a compliment to my yard and I am afraid of the winter freeze killing them. I just barely bought this house so I have no idea how to protect my plants. I have a total of three Bougainvillea's two near the house and one is crawling up my fense. I can't believe how fast these things grow, what can I do to protect them? I really don't want to loose them. I live in Fresno California Zone 9 and it doesn't freeze here often but it does get cold and frosty. Can someone help?

  1. My wife and I also love these plants. We have grown them for years. They will not survive freeze. We have had the best luck watching weather reports, and if we expect a freeze, then we cover them with an old sheet or blanket. Be sure to cover complete top. Any part that is exposed to ice will die. We live in the Sacramento Valley, zone 9. It is a good idea to cut them back dramatically so there is not so much exposure. They will grow back fast in spring.
