What should I do to my new Gateway Laptop before I actually start to connect to the internet and use it? I don't want it to crash later on because I wasn't prepared. What programs/things should I download first to make sure my comp is at utmost performance? I am going to listen to music a lot, go online a lot, and write a lot. That's about it minimal to no gaming, and I'm using my built in webcam to make youtube videos =] Thanks a lot if you can help me start off my first laptop on the right foot!!!

  1. Get avg 8 its free and then look for music and rip them on your harddrive. Good luck

  2. first, get a good anti-virus/ad-ware/pop-up block software.  you don't want to your new laptop to be infested with viruses and p**n ads.

  3. What you should do is return your computer for a refund, buy a Macbook, and macs come bundled with EVERYTHING you need, they are extremely powerful for a cheaper price. They also have no risk of viruses. They are perfect for what your details explained.

    Good luck,

    and you wont regret it!

  4. Nothing other than ( google these )

Firefox ( web browser, use this instead of Internet Explorer )

Auslogic Aisk Aefrag ( defragmenter , run it after using CCleaner once a month )

    CCleaner ( Use this maybe once a day- it's a quick clean-up )

For security though, you can get Avast and Adaware each to sweep your system when you suspect something is wrong. ( maybe once a month )

  5. first i would get an antivirus,

the one i have and would recommend is AVG 8.0

    http://www.grisoft.com/

it comes with internet security so ur all set

  6. DOWNLOAD FIREFOX the best Internet browser and its really safe and you can add cool apps like maps and youtube you don't even need to go to the address bar and you can have everything there already for you

  7. I would suggest, get Firefox, and learn to use it, and get a Gmail account, and learn to use it.

Once you have a Gmail account, you can store all your email ONLINE and so you won't have to store it ON YOUR COMPUTER so you'll save one heck of a lot of disk space on your computer. Okay?

Next step: with your Gmail account, get into Google Docs and Spreadsheets (also free). You can store your Documents and Spreadsheets online, ALSO saving disk space. The documents are a also compatible with Word and with OpenOffice, plus you can save them as PDF files or HTML files.

Next step: with your Gmail account, get into Picassa. You can organize photos on your computer or upload slideshows to space online and "collect'em, trade'em with friends!" They can link to slide shows you store online.

Figure out Google Chat and Google Bookmarks.

With all these FREE things, you can get to them anywhere, from any computer, without having to lug YOUR computer around. And your nifty new Gateway still have a lot of space!

  8. First and most important is to get a good defense against malware. For that use:

    browser - http://www.opera.com/  - replace IE, it's a malware magnet junk

    antivirus - http://www.avast.com/

    antispyware - http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/detai...

    ................. - http://www.safer-networking.org/en/downl...

    firewall - http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/

    maintenance - http://www.iobit.com/beta.html

They are all the best in their category and FREE. Stay away from AVG, Norton or security suites.

Next you need a good Office suite - http://www.openoffice.org/

Finally you will need a good media player http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ and the editing  http://www.virtualdub.org/ and converting http://www.mediaconverter.org/index.php?... soft for the videos

  9. First, you should go through all the pre-installed applications on your computer to see which one's are pure garbage. You could do a search on the Internet to see what people think of the pre-installed applications you have, then decide from there.

Does your shiny new laptop come with Anti-Virus pre-installed on it? That would be the number 1 thing to get. There are some very good free ones out there, such as AVG or Avast!. Both work very well.

Once those are done, you can have fun with the laptop. Enjoy!

  10. ok this is wat u do....u use ur labtop
