Question:

Bought a new computer, need help reconnecting my Wireless-G USB Network Adapter ver. 4?

I have a computer in my room and have always used a small Linksys product to get my internet access from the main router in my family's office/living room.

I don't know exactly what this miniature router is called, only what's labeled on the bottom and top of it. "Linkysys Wireless-G USB Network Adapter ver. 4"

Recently, I replaced my virus-infested tower (which had Windows XP) with a more useful Laptop (which has Windows Vista).

So far, I have been unable to get internet access because whenever I plug the USB Linksys into the laptop, it requests a CD disc to "install" the program it's seeing.

I've tried putting in the Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router Setup Wizard, but it says that you can only install the program from the main router's computer with internet access.

Someone suggested going to the Linksys "webbrowser interface" from the main computer to find my laptop in the other room; though I have no idea how to do that.

  1. Well, Bad news my friend. I checked the linksys web site and... It is not compatible with the new Vista software. :( So you will have to buy another that is compatible with Vista. Check Amazon.com or your local target, staples, walmart, etc. Best of luck!

  2. call linksys tech support. it is free and they will walk you through step by step. however, this what you need to do.

    1.)install the drivers for the usb network adapter

    ===================================

    locate the cd that came with your wireless-g usb network adapter. make sure the adapter is not plugged into the laptop. install the software on the cd by double clicking my computer then double click the cd drive. then double click setup.exe. complete the install of the software.

    2.)connect the laptop/pc via a wired network cable to router

    ======================================...

    next you will need to use CAT5 or CAT6 network cable and plug one end into the back of a numbered port in the back of your router. turn off your laptop/pc. plug the other end to the built-in network port on your laptop (you'll need to have one, if not see if you can find a pc to temporarily use that has a built in network port). turn on your laptop/pc and wait for it to boot up.

    3.)connect to the router via web browser

    ===============================

    double-click internet explorer and in the address box try to connect to the router using these addresses, one of the below should work:

    http://192.168.0.1

    http://192.168.1.1

    http://192.168.100.1

    4.)locate the configuration information

    locate and write down the following configuration information. you will need to click through the pages to find the information. generally there will be a link called wireless and/or wireless security or something similar. you will need to write down the following: SSID network name, encryption tylpe (WEP/WPA/WPA2), encryption key.

    5.)disconnect the wired connection & connect the wireless

    unplug the CAT5 / CAT6 cable from both the router and the laptop/pc. on your laptop reboot it and then plug in the usb network adapter. double click the linksys icon located in the lower right section of your screen in the system tray. follow the prompts to configure the connection, it will ask you for all the information that you wrote down from step 4. after you enter all that information you will be able to connect.

    Good luck.

  3. If it's a new laptop then it will have it's own adapter built-in. Look around in the control panel for a connections icon or something (sorry I don't have vista) and then search for networks and then click connect.

    Sorry for the vague advise!
