How is the best way to clean off the rust, some places seem to be rusted tight making it unable to adjust the bike. How should I deal with this? Thank you in advance!

  1. clean the rust off, get everything else off. give it a new paint job. and it will look almost brand new.

  2. For the pieces that are rusted tightly together get some WD-40 and liberally coat the affected pieces. Let sit over night and when you are ready to try it again spray it again but a little lighter. Using the right sized wrench, I do not recommend  adjustable size wrenches, try to loosen the nut, not the bolt. If it is still seized actually try to tighten it a wee bit. If it moves at all try moving it back and forth until the WD-40 gets worked in. It should get easier to unscrew and come off.

If it is a nut and bolt scenario and the bolt snaps off, Perfect ! ! ! Now you can use a new Nut/bolt set. Replace the old rusty nut/bolt in either case. Rust never dies.

If it is a stud welded to the frame be careful. It is harder to fix and may take a welder to repair.

For surface or cosmetic rust the WD-40 will remove some of that too, but it really should be sanded down to bare metal and then primed and painted. A rust converter can be applied if you can not get all the pits out, then prime and paint. Primer and paint in a rattle can (Spray can) can be used with good results. Just follow the directions. Light coats and over lap the spray pattern.

If it is rusty chrome a chrome polish should help.

  3. Steel wool = magic

Also you can use a wire wheel brush to get off heavy rust.

  4. CLEAN WITH BRILLO
