I bought the tv for 2 dollars. When you turn it on it stays on for two seconds then shuts off. Its a magnavox dvd vcr combo. Is it worth fixing or should I just dump it?

Thanks

  1. The auto shut down indicates a power supply problem. May well be why it sold for $2.00 as most trash co's won't take them. Call around to local TV repair shops and get an estimate to have it fixed, as you are only out the $2.00, it might be worth it to you to have it repaired. Since it is a combo and the original owner payed good money for it some time ago, another $100 or so to fix it was not a good idea for them. If it was just a TV I'd say dump it.

  2. It may have been sitting for a while in a damp place. Keep it plugged in for a few days.Warm it up it may surprise you. It may need some TLC. Look it over in the dark. If you see sparks you have real problems. But, 2 bucks is an adventure. Take a few moments to enjoy the idea of getting a really good TV, That's my story and I am sticking to it.

  3. id toss it, it was only 2 dollars for a reason

  4. Simplest and cheapest problem could be the VCR needs its mode gear or belt repaired.  Basically the VCR needs to initialize and unload when it is first turned on after plugging in.  Also could be a problem with the DVD player.  This is why I avoid these multifunction units and buy separate products or at least keep the TV separate from the players and recorders.

Is it worth it?  Get an estimate and see.  But do not pay more than a new set is worth.

Magnavox is a cheaper brand and is usually a recycle item when broken unless you can find someone who repairs them cheap.  Might want to see if a high school or college electronics class repairs TV sets in your area.
