Bought a used car am reselling taking a loss - can I get a title transferred over from my name without having to register and insure it then sign it over to the new buyer - still has 30 day tag -He's put half down and has it insured

need to give him the title though. Thanks for any help!

  1. You cannot sell a car that is not yours.  You must first title it in your name before you can sell it.  If you don't title it, it is called "jumping the title" and that is illegal.  If the title is already in your name, I know of no law that says, it must be licensed and insured, to be able to sell it.  It may be required to be titled, licensed and insured to DRIVE the car, but not  to sell it.


  2. Yes.  As long as you aren't trying to put this on the road, you can transfer the title (and pay taxes) and just sign the new title over.  

    But, those 30 day tags are NOT transferrable.  And, they ARE a registration, so insurance SHOULD be in place.

  3. first of all, did you buy from a person or a dealer. if you bought the car from a dealer, you can take the title back to him to resign it over to the new person. if you bought the car from a person, you need so send the title off so it will come back in your name, then you can transfer new ownership
