Question:

Bought used car in Illinois, moving immediately to FL, can I register in IL and then re-title it in FL?

I currently live in downtown Chicago. I am buying a used car for $9k from a friend of mine later this month and the same day I plan to move to Florida. I understand that I have to immediately get IL license plates, but is there an easy way to do this so that I am not having to register and then title the car in both IL and FL? My concern is that the 7.25% tax in Chicago is quite high in comparison to Florida and I want to avoid taxes here if I can or just make sure that I don't pay taxes in both locations.

I was thinking about only getting some kind of temporary license plate here and registering the car in IL, but then not getting the title transferred (and thus pay taxes) until I move to FL.

Does anybody have any experience with this?

THanks.

  1. You are going to buy the car and then the same day you are driving to FL. Make sure you have a clear title in your hands before you leave even if it takes a week. If something goes wrong you are about 1200 miles away, also make sure it is covered by insurance in your name.

  2. go to the DMV and tell them your situation and they can help you out. Get a temporary 30 day tag on it and pay $15.00 and you should be fine.
