I am reading an article about Bourdieu and intend to write an essay about it. Do any of you familiar with his work have any suggestions for essay topics concerning habitus, practical and reflexive knowledge, etc? I understand the concepts, but cannot think of a topic as I have already written two essays on Bourdieu and I'm running out of ideas.

  1. How about an essay on how Bourdieu's concept of habitus is really just a restatement of earlier ideas about the internalization of self put forward by the pragmatist philosophers and symbolic interactionists.  I've never been that convinced that his conceptual apparatus indicated an advance over the internalization of self thru dialog with imagined (significant, generalized) others.  Like Bourdeiu much better when is he working out his views on the complexities of class and taste...

  2. Why were the leaders of the civil rights movement and the antiwar movement of the Vietnam era(SDS, Weathermen) so predominately Jewish? Jews are only about 2.5% of the US population. This might apply to habitus-the parents might have been left wing.
