Bouts of homesickness? Why am I experiencing this?

OK, so I've been away from my family for awhile now (2 yrs) & I only get to see them for holidays, long story short: it has been tough at times to deal with it especially right after I've seen them. Has anyone experienced these bouts of homesickness that seem to occur as soon as the departing has happened? How do you deal?

  1. You must be very attached to your family ... I never had those feelings , I was never that far away .

  2. It's normal.  The best thing to do is to wallow in it for a few minutes, then find something to take your mind off it.  Like a book or an exercise tape or something like that.  it;s worse at night because you stopped being busy.  Just remember that if you were there, you would be complaining because x*x stole your sweater, and xxxx puts too much salt in the beans.  Try to think of it in real terms, not sad terms.

  3. I just try not to think of it and stay focused on the reason that i'm away in hopes that in the future my reasons for leaving will bring us back together.

  4. I try to remember that I'm lucky to  have seen my family at all.

I am now more appreciative since my mother-in-law has passed away-my husband would do anything to see his mom again. So, every time I get to see my family, although rare, I Cherish it and am grateful to have seen them at all.

  5. It's quite normal to miss your loved ones and feeling melancholy when you leave. It's all part of our human emotions and of wanting to remain with those you care about. Having stayed away from my own family off & on for 25 years or so I was always sad on the way back from visits.

I dealt with it by writing often and weekly calls to my parents or children to let them know I thought of them daily & tell them how much I loved & missed them.

The memories linger on though and you are very blessed to have been able to see them and share this moment in time.
