Bowlers dominate the match between Kent and Middlesex: County Championship Division Two – 1st Day’s Recap
23 wickets fell on day-one of the County Championship Division Two match between Kent and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013, on Sunday, June 19, 2011.
The visitors were bowled out for just 87 runs in their first innings and ended the day with 46 for three in their second outing. Middlesex were also bowled out once in the day after scoring 153 runs. The day was completely dominated by the bowlers, as the hosts had the upper hand in the end.
Conditions were extremely difficult for the batsmen, as the wicket had a lot of pace in it. There was moisture beneath the surface of the wicket, which helped the seam bowlers trouble the batsmen throughout the entire day. Middlesex captain, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Neil-Dexter-c2091, had absolutely no doubt in his mind to field first after winning the toss.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/JL-Denly-c1703 struggled to score runs and missed the ball quite a lot of times.
Key was the first man to be dismissed in the innings after adding nine runs to the total. He was followed by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sam-Alexander-Northeast-c88181, who failed to open his account and got out for a first ball duck.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Darren-Ian-Stevens-c52453 were the next to follow. They scored one and zero before getting out on consecutive deliveries.
Denly limped to double figures, scoring 10 runs off 42 and was sent back to the pavilion after that. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/James-Elliott-Goodman-c65660 followed him after failing to trouble the scorers. This was the third time in the innings that two wickets fell on the same total. The first two fell on 13, followed by next two on 20 and finally the last two on 22.
Wicketkeeper batsman, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Azhar-Mahmood-c1116, collected 23 runs for the seventh wicket partnership before the keeper was dismissed on 11 runs.
Mahmood played well under pressure though, top scoring the innings with 32 runs in very difficult conditions. His effort guided Kent’s total to 87 in the end.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Timothy-James-Murtagh-c94030 enjoyed the bowling friendly conditions, taking a five-wicket haul in the day.
Middlesex were given a terrific start by their opener, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Scott-Newman-c2467, as the pair put together 54 runs for the first wicket partnership. They got out after scoring 40 and 22 in their respective knocks and the rest of the batting failed miserably.
Mahmood, who did a wonderful job with the bat earlier in the day, was phenomenal with the ball as well, picking up six wickets.
At http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Close-c51347 of play on day-one, Kent were 46/3. Opening batsman, Denly remained unbeaten on 23 and will be eying some support from the other end, as his team trails by 20 runs.
