In the baseball boxscore next to the reliefs pitchers name there is sometimes an H and then a comma and then a number next to it. What does it mean?

Thank you.

  1. hold

  2. That is a statistic called a Hold.

A Hold is when a reliever enters the game in a save situation (less than 3 run lead) and he leaves the game without surrendering the lead. For example, if Heath Bell comes into the 8th inning in a 6-4 game and he strikes out the side, he is awarded the Hold.

The interesting about the Hold is that you don't have to record an out. You just need to enter the game in a save situation and leave without surrendering the lead. So theoretically, there is as many Holds in a game as the number of relief pitchers you have.

    Hope I helped.

  3. It means a Hold

A Hold is a stat that you get as a reliever when you come into a game, and don't allow the game tying/go ahead run to score on you. Basically it's a "pre-save" save. It gets a little more technical, but thats a straitforward definition.

  4. It is a hold, meaning that pitcher kept the team ahead before the closer came in and the number is the number of times this year he has held the game.

  5. Probably for a "Hold." Although I haven't seen that listed in any box scores that I look at normally.

  6. That is called a hold here is the wikipedia page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hold_(baseb...

  7. it means a hold, he is usually your 7-8 inning guy, someone to "hold" the game so that the closer can come in and "save" it for the team

  8. i was wondering about that too cause its in my mlb 08 the show and i never knew wat it meant but i guess it means hold

  9. I THINK THIS QUESTION HAS ALREADY BEEN ANSWERED, BUT ANY WAY IT MEANS A HOLD.
