so right now i have a ported box for a 12" sub. it was for my type r but i blew a voice coil so i went and ordered a kicker CVX and the amp going to it will be a kicker zx750.1. i still have the same box and it is 1.76 cu ft. the minimum ported box for the CVX is 1.75 cu ft. does this mean i get minimum quality out of the sub or will it be dangerous for the sub? i have an 01 firebird and i dont know if a bigger box will fit in the back hatch or not. they dont make custom single sub ported boxes for my car. i want to get a 3.06 cu ft box but dont know if it will fit or not. i would build one but i never have so it wouldnt be that great and i dont know anyone around here who can. what should i do??

  1. 1.75 CF minimum just means that is the smallest ammount of airspace that the sub can perform under without suffocating or over heating or other bad things. the bigger the box the more space for sound to move in equals more volume (louder). your cvx is going to be pushing 750W. so id go with more than the minimum space. smaller boxes work good for lower wattages. i have a 1.5 or 1.75 CF box. in it is a sony 500W 12". im im only running it at 100W so its perfect i have two "sound holes" drilled in mine that are1.5 inch for when i did push 1000W in that box and it never suffocated or over heated. try that. start with one and then move on if you need it

  2. Running the Kicker in your old box will not hurt it, the box is pretty close to Kicker recommendations so it may sound good. One thing to consider is the size of the port, Kickers recommended enclosures have large slot stlye ports, if your box has slot ports it is probably close to recommended.

Yes your speaker will produce more sound if it is in a box that is at Kickers maximum recommended size. Kicker recommends a sealed box for Sound Quality applications and a ported box for SPL applications. If you want high sound quality and linear bass response that can reach sub-sonic levels go with sealed. Sealed is best when it come to reaching a wide frequency range, people who listen to Rock and other forms of music with a lot of instruments & drums should choose sealed. Ported boxes can produce higher SPL levels but they perform the best between 30-80 hz, as Kicker puts it ported boxes are good for "ground pounding street bass that makes your skin bounce on your your bones". So if you like Rap & Hip Hop and other bass heavy music you choose ported.

That said if you dont like how it sounds in your old box build your own. All you need is 3\4inch MDF, wood screws, caulk\silicone, spray adhesive and a table or Skill saw. Sealed is the easiest, go with the maximum volume if you can. Cut your Mdf to size, use some clamps and\or a friend to hold two side together so you can pre drill the s***w holes. If you dont pre drill the holes the Mdf will split. Once you have pre driled the holes caulk\silicone the edges and s***w them together. Once you are finished go back and caulk the inside to make sure it is sealed. Use the spray adhesive to glue down the carpet, no sewing necessary just match up the edges then use a strait edge and a razor to cut the carpet.
