Hey all, I'm 13 years old and I'm in grade 8. I've been in boxing the past 4-5 months and I've started to spar. In school I'm an A+ student, get like 90%+ on every test, etc. Will boxing effect this at all? I don't plan on doing many bouts, mainly the workout. If so, how many bouts would you say on average it would take to effect my brain? Also, today in boxing I didn't bring water, my throat was very dry, then when I took my mouthguard off, it had white, pasty, foamy spit in it. Afterwards my spit was all foamy+white. Is this from dehydration? Thanks in advance. =]

  1. Drink at least 8 glasses of water during the day, before your workout. Studies have shown that pro boxers who have had 20 plus pro fights usually show SOME deteriation in the brain... or somthing like that... maybe it was 40? anywho, if you got headgear and all that, and in sparring it isnt as bad either. One or two bouts wont hurt ya! Well permanantly anyway, they'll do you some good and make you a tougher person.

  2. Its not the bouts its what type of shots you are taking. if you don't drink enough water it damages the organs as well as the brain. like all sports you need to keep yourself fit physically and mentally all the time.

  3. you need to drink water when you train it is very important! the white foamy stuff happens from continued use just wash it out with toothpaste and water or mouth wash. taking head shots has shown to be damaging to the brain. this is why it is important to protect yourself at all times. at your age right now you won't be fighting but the training you do now when you spar and do drills will make you ready for that first fight when you get older. good luck

  4. it is from dehydration and lack of some oxygen.. and if you really trying to train full time then it will effect ur grade but if ur doing for just hobby or fun then it's alright.. i would recommend you to have a bout at age 16~18 because u still need some more trainning to develop in many areas u need to work on.. and just take some time and don't rush.. boxing is Discipline  sports good luck

  5. Seriously? Yes, boxing can be very damaging to the brain, especially one that is not fully developed (which isn't until about the age of 25). If you want actual evidence, just look at Muhammad Ali today, and he took far fewer blows to the head than the people he fought.

The reason boxing is so injurious is becase the hits to the head cause the brain to "slosh around" inside the cranium. The brain is about the same consistency as jello, so it isn't exactly firm enough to resist blows to the head.

There is stretching and tearing of neurons when a blow happens which will cause the brain to misfire. You are also at increased risk for concussion and/or a brain hemorrhage.

Having worked with hundreds of patients will all severities of brain injuries, not only would I not allow a child of mine to box, I think bloodsports (boxing is one) should be outlawed entirely.

Sure would save the states lots of money in nursing home and rehabilitation bills.
