  1. If you are coming into this new and fresh with no martial arts background. You might want to look in the yellow pages under Martial arts and see whats around you and start calling them up and see what are there prices. Some might have good programs or deals for you Its not just about the style most martial arts styles are good they just have some bad instructors. Most schools lets you attend their classes for free for couple of days to see how you like it. So might want to ask about that to.

  2. you should do tae kwon do it is really fun and easy and i started it like 6 mobths ago and i love it try it out

  3. I advise you to go to see in the dojo various practices such as the judo, karate, aikido, self defense,  tai chi, Kempo, and you will have a better idea.

  4. MMA is the best, simply because it teaches Striking, and Grappling,so in a fight your well rounded. Most MMA Teachers use these: Muay Thai,Kickboxing,Brazilian Jiu Jitsu,Judo. BJJ and Judo cover Grappling,Judo has good standup as well. MuayThai and Kickboxing are almost the same style. My MMA school teaches Judo,Submission wrestling,BJJ,and Kickboxing. I have been in two fights since I started a year ago,and have won. Grappling is my strong point.

  5. What you have to watch out for is many people will recommend a style yet they have no training in anything. They base what they say on what they see in the uFC, on fight quest or human weapon, or what they have read on here. Very few people who answer on here actually train, although many claim to.

Another bad thing about it is that you will only get partial information. Many people say karate, but karate is basically just a category in martial arts. their are many different styles of karate from different countries. For example most will say that karate is kicking and punching, and it is, but they Will fail to mention that Okinawan karate contains a lot of stand up grappling, because they just don't know.

I can't list all of the style's and what they contain because I don't know them all well enough, and there just isn't time. Here is a good source to get a fairly good overview:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martial_art...

This will give you general idea. Many will also recommend a style based on tv, even if they have never trained it. Almost everybody who actually trains will tell you that their is no best style, they all have strengths and weaknesses, and that it is ore in how you train. Here are the steps I suggest you take:

Not knowing what styles or schools are availible in your area I suggest the following:

    1) Do a search on here about finding a good school. there are many excellent answers about what to look for and what to avoid.

    2) Locate all of the schools in your area, and research what the style's they teach include. You can eliminate a lot of possibilities just by doing this. Say you want weapons for sure, there is no sense even looking at a style or school that doesn't train them. Make sure it is an actual style, not just generic karate or kung fu etc.

    3) Go to each of the schools that you decide to check out and watch at least 2 classes. Compare them to the list you got from the search.

    4) Choose the style that most interests you that has the best instruction and training that you can afford.

Chances are if you are unwilling to do this you will not stick qwith any style anyway.

I don't care if you decide on Tai Chi, Judo, Bjj, Muay Thai, Any style of karate, etc., as long as you find the best school you can.

    Good luck!

  6. well lets see...it all depends on your location and what you are interested in. Many people have their own preference as to which Martial Art to choose and it all boils down to you. They have Traditional, Classical and Competitive.

If you prefer Grappling [Soft] Martial Arts try Aikido {Japanese} , Tai Chi (Chinese) , Qi Gong (Chinese) Judo , Jujitsu, Hapkido, Brazalian Jiu Jutsu, Sambo, Shuai Jiao, Glima and many more.

If you prefer Striking [Hard] Martial Arts consider Karate, Taekwondo, Kung Fu (Shaolin), Wushu, Capoeira, Western Boxing, Muai Thai, Silat and more.

Lastly, If you prefer Weapons to CQC (close quarters combat) try Kendo (Sword - Japanese) , Fencing , Eskrima , Silambam ( Traditional Stick Fighting {correct me if i;m wrong} ) and  more.

Do not forget that some Martial Arts also lets you use weapons as well as Hand to Hand Combat eg Aikido ( Jo, Tanto , Bokken ) , Silat ( Staff / Stcik ) , Wushu ( SIngle/Double edged sword, staff, spear )

But all in all its up to you XD Gd luck finding the one that Suits To your liking :)
