Hello, i am jiu-jitsu/muay thai fighter and my boxing isn't that good. i am always clinching (knees) and working for the takedown and straight jiu jitsu with ground and pound. anyways could some people give me the basic theory to counter punching for boxing? for example what do you usually do to counter straight punches? hooks? uppercuts? whats some good 1.2 counters. 1.2.3 counters? thanks in advance.

  1. well countering is basically looking for the opening as your opponent is punching or after the punch. Some people (especially those who are not trained well) will throw a punch and forget to bring their hands back quickly, which is your opportunity to throw something right behind their punch.

I like to just let my opponent throw at me and if i think im faster or if they have a lazy punch ill throw right after they do. So right after they hit me and i block it or even if they do land the punch i got something coming over the top of it. For example if i block a job, as soon as i block it i know there is an opening to the left side of their head or their body and i can try and catch them before they bring their hand back. THere is no one punch to use for counter punching because its based on your body position and where your opponent is.

For example some fighters make mistakes that are costly. Fernando Vargas is a perfect example. He had all the tools, fast hands, power, combination speed, tons of stamina. But his biggest weakness was that he often dropped his right hand whenever he went to throw any punch. And in all the fights he got KOed in, it was always the left hook counter punch.

I would work on letting someone punch you while your in your guard and look for the openings afterwards. Eventually it will become a quicker response. The great thing about a counter punch is no one ever sees it coming so the damage is magnified.

  2. if you train in muay thai your trainer should be able to show you what a counter punch looks like. one simple one is being faster than the other person and when they put out a punch either go under or over with your own punch before they can bring it back to their face. another one is to slip a punch and then come back with a punch. go ask your trainer to teach you
