Question:

Boxing Questions?

I have two questions.

One: I started working out with my heavy bag today, and I was wearing gloves, but the skin still peeled off my knuckles. Why? and what can I do to prevent it?

Two: How do I use wraps? Like cotton ones?

Thanks!

  1. You have to remember that your hands sweat in those gloves causing your skin to get very soft and soggy if you will....the friction from your fist hitting the bag will cause your skin to tear...whether you have handwraps on or not....the good news is after about a month of hitting the bag your knukcles will develop scar tissue and it will not happen again....trust me I went through it.

  2. 1st:  Maybe your gloves are also too big causing too much friction.  Try using some wraps under your gloves so the gloves aren't rubbing right up against the skin.

    2nd:  http://www.boxinggyms.com/tips/handwraps...

Half way down the page you'll see links that says Method1, Method2, etc.  It shows you different wrapping styles.

  3. if only skin off your knuckles - that is common. Even with wraps your knuckles can be red after a work out. Normal. However, if your hands can rotate and move in your gloves, that is another matter.

Then your gloves are either fit too lose or are too big. Though your hands will expand (swell) somewhat while punching, the best advise is ALWAYS to wrap them. In boxing your hands are your tools. I've seen plenty of injuries happen - even by people who should know better - by not wrapping hands. Wrapping keeps your bones in place and keep your tendons positioned. You should never work heavy bags without them.

When applying make sure you secure and wrap your thumbs. If you are new to boxing, chances are your timing is off, and your technique is so-so. Increasing the chances of punching the bag hard, but partially with your thumb. You will not be the first to break a digit that way...

Measure your hands, and opt a correct size. Practice wrapping, if you are right handed, you will need to learn how to wrap correctly with your left hand. Easier said then done at first. It takes practice because you need to feel what is a correct pressure. Too little and wrapping has no point. Too much and your hands will hurt like crazy after a minute. Don't make the mistake of 'gutting it out'. There is no shame in re-doing your wraps mid-workout.

Owh and you may want to look for stretching ones. Much more practical vs cotton ones...  :-)
