Boxing Trainer Goody Petronelli dies at 88 – Boxing news
Goody Petronelli, legendary boxing trainer from Brockton, passed away at 88 as informed by his son.
Goody has been among the most cherished trainers of the boxing industry since he has trained some of the most popular boxers of all times, including but not limited to Marvelous Marvin Hagler.
The sad news was revealed by Goody’s son David Petronelli of Middleboro. According to him, Goody expired on Sunday, January 29, early in the morning at his residence in Sagamore. Goody Petronelli was 88 and expired due to natural causes without any serious
illness.
Throughout his career, Goody served boxers not only as a trainer but also as a corner man, and his accomplishments of training boxers to their utmost potential were known worldwide. His foremost achievement was to train and work in the corner of the middleweight
champion Marvin Hagler.
On the tragic loss, Bob Arum shared his grieve for Goody and his team saying, “They were loyal, unflappable guys, both of them. When somebody dies you try to say nice things but the brothers were loyal and hardwoking. As Marvin's promoter, I always knew
they had my back. I worked more with Goody as he was the manager and Pat was more the trainer for Hagler. Just decent, decent guys who didn't play any games whether the opponent was Sugar Ray Leonard or anyone else. I found them to be splendid people to work
with.”
Goody initially started as a professional boxer back in 1930. He was serving the Navy and at the same developed interest in professional boxing. He started his gym to train amateurs in downtown Brockton along with his brother Pat Petronelli in 1969. It was
because of Goody that Hagler was able to retain his title, world middleweight division, for almost 6 years.
According to Goody’s son David, the recent months were not too smooth for the expired especially after the death of his wife, Marian J. Pat (Gorman) at 70 in last October. He further added that he could see deep grief in his father’s eyes whenever he met
him. Before his wife, in September, Goody lost his brother Pat who was 89.
As of now, funeral arrangements are being made for the legendary trainer in Middleboro.
