Boxing and Cross Country?

Hi. I am a very good cross country runner. I am a freshman in high school who loves to run. I am training my way to become an olympic distance runner. I know that runners are skinny, but all muscle. I am also a very good boxer who wants to get into it professionally. I know boxing incorporates endurance and I know it would help in both sports. Boxing would also help with my cross country training. Is it possible that I can be a professional in both of these sports? Can I be good at both of these sports, probably even the best in the world (in boxing, only in my weight division)? I have always dreamed of becoming a professional athlete. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.

  1. Josh you just took me back to decades ago.  In other words I've done all that and yes you can do whatever you want to do.

From middle school to the end of high school I was a cross country runner, wrestler and boxer for all of them years.  Big schools wanted me for scholorships but my GPA was too low so I joined the Marines and became an All Marine featherweight and afterwards was a California State Champion but I passed up the pros for an education.

Distance running is so important if you want to be on top for the duration of a fight.  You think faster, throw faster, and get much stronger with time.  It was hard for me to stay out of the ring so after about ten marathons I stepped back into the ring to sparr with a world champion and them once a week ten rounders were nothing for me.

During that time I had already dogged out at the 88 olympic trails (5000) and became a miler (4:07 PR) while campaigning with reebox for an endorsement.  Cross training is the only way to go man.  Yes it's very possible for you do go all the way.  You can do it!

Years ago a famous trainer told his young fighter that if he listened to him and did everything that he said including having the four D's in his body then he would turn him into a World Champion. 1) Drive 2) Determination 3) Dedication and the most important D of them all 4) Discilpline.

And that trainer knew what he was alking about because he already had turned out fourteen World Champion fighters.  This is a fact with any personal endeavor.  Remember the four D's and just get busy because you have all of the time in the World.

  2. A couple of years ago I had a friend who did both in high school, he was a great amature fighter and still holds the Highschool record for our school in cross country. Cross Country helps for conditioning  in boxing and boxing helps cross country mentally.

    Stay focus and determined.

  3. its not impossible. if you want to box you should be in a lower weight class where speed and endurance is espicially needed.
