Question:

Boxing combination question?

Well I am your typical Outside Fighter type boxer, and I rely heavily on the Jab and the Cross. That is all good and fine, but my question concerns a certain combination I like to throw, the 1-2-3-2 (Jab, Cross, Left Head Hook, Cross). I usually fight shorter opponents, and this works well against them, because I move in rather easily and unload a ton of Cross, Hook, Cross, Hook etc by moving to their left.

However I've never used this combo on a person my height or taller, so I don't know how effective this combo would be. So here is what I'd like answered:

1.) Do you think this would be an effective combo to use against sparring with someone your own height, or do the combo need to be shortened up for defensive purposes. And 2.) When do you think would be the best time to throw this combination if you were sparring.

Thanks for your responses, 10 points for the best answer!

  1. Thats a good combo for shorter fighters like you said, and you might even have some success with it against less experienced taller fighters as well. However, an experienced tall(er) fighter will want to keep you on the outside. The 1-2 you use at the beginning of your combo is a dead giveaway to someone who knows what they're doing that a left hook is probably going to follow. They will look to slip the first cross and counter with a left hook of their own (if they are orthodox) over your cross before you can fire your left hook. Try throwing the 1-2 and then going to the body with a right hook or jab to get inside and then think about the left hook upstairs. The 1-1-2 is a good way to get inside a taller fighter as well. The double jab is SO underrated and under-used. I hope this helped. Let me know.

  2. First off, we need to know how tall and how agile you are.

    - If you're agile, you can basically do whatever you want. You can bob and dance around in front of the guy and constantly rotate and pivot him with spinning punches all day long.

    - If you're tall and lanky, you're stuck to staying on the outside and basically fighting like Paul Williams all the time. In general, you always keep your punches snappy since you don't want your opponents to slap them out of the way and counter you. If you're fighting someone your size, you're back to square one - just do whatever works.
