Boxing latest; Vijender Singh credited his luck as a major factor at the Asian Games
The 25-year-old professional boxer from India, Vijender Singh who despite his dislocated thumb did well to capture a gold medal at the boxing event in the sixteenth edition of the recently concluded Asian Games insisted on Monday
that his luck was a great factor in his victory.
World number one Singh, who didn’t perform up to the mark at the Commonwealth Games held in New Delhi last month, blanked out the two time world champion Abbos Atoev of Uzbekistan in this year’s final of the Asian Games in China.
While commenting on his condition during the final match after his return to India from Guangzhou, Singh reflected on Monday, "My hand was in a terrible state even before the Asian Games however it completely broke at the worst
possible time. It was in the closing stages of the first round. I got the score for that left hook but I knew my hand was gone. I quickly told my coach that I cannot move it,"
The Olympic bronze-medallist finished his Commonwealth Games’ campaign on a disappointing note with a bronze medal at the last month’s multi discipline, after falling down in the semi-finals as a result of warnings for clinching.
Vijender, however, came back strongly with a final victory just a month later at the Asian Games in China which he said has at last wiped off the disappointment.
"That defeat totally shattered me. I had not felt so disappointing in a long time. When I went to the Asian Games, I was taking it one bout at a time. I think I raised my game at the right time besides China was lucky for me. My
rise started in Beijing after all. I like to go into a shell during major competitions. Keep to myself and concentrate and at the Asian Games I could do that. There was peace all around me and that supported me to remain calm,” said Vijender.
Moreover, the Indian boxing star also gave credit to his BI Fernandes for his recent achievements. He added that his coach is an intelligent person who always keeps giving instructions from the sidelines and that exactly happened
in Guangzhou as well as their was not too much noise around which later on helped the Indian a great deal in winning the gold for his country.
Vijender will begin his preparations for the World Championships and the Olympic qualifiers for 2012 Games to be held in London by the start of next year.
