I was watching the Diaz-Pacquiao fight last night and noticed that Pacquiao seems to be concerned after knocking Diaz down and tried to help him up. Im not a big boxing fan so I havent watch that many fights and find it quite odd. wanted to check if its norm and if any other famous boxers did it in their fights.

  1. Can't remember who got plastered, but Jack Dempsey helped up a guy.  I've seen it other times, but generally the ring doctor wants to keep the hurt fighter down until things are ok.

I think maybe Alexis Arguello did the same.

  2. After knocking out Luis "the Wild Bull" Firpo in 1923 (after two rounds of mutual mayhem), Jack Dempsey graciously helped lift Firpo to his corner. Sportsmanship was pretty impressive then.

  3. It's not a good idea on many levels, unless you so dominate a guy you want to crush him with your mind as well. Or maybe you think you might have killed him by mistake.

You need to understand how much energy is used in boxing and it's really a fight against gravity. Every time you go down you have to fight gravity to get back up. The more energy you spend, the less you have and the better chance I have to win the bout. It's excluded from sportsmanship, it's part of the dance.

  4. noooooooooooooooooooooooooo

  5. I saw mad Mike Tyson do it during his second career, and I've seen Roy Jones even trying to get the ref to stop a fight.

What Manny attempted was not wise in any situation so most boxers don't try to do it..................there are doctors and trainers to do that, plus the ref's there too.

  6. I saw Floyd Patterson helping Ingemar Johansson to his feet after knocking him out.  Floyd was a good man and genuinely was concerned for his well being.

  7. I've seen it a few times, but only after the fight was over. The boxer isn't allowed near a fallen opponent while the referee gives the count. It's a rare thing to see, with all the ego.

  8. not during a fight, but floyd patterson is one example of a gentleman who helped opponents up after the fight was over.

  9. There was that one guy that Tyson knocked out viciously, he tried to help the guy up but the coach pushed him away.

  10. It's not wise to pull a knocked out boxer up as he could have injuries or not fully gained consciousness. You're supposed to allow the boxer to come round and have the medics check him over.

Pretty much every fight I've seen, whether an opponent has been knocked out or not and the fight has ended, at some point the two competitors congratulate and acknowledge one another. The only fight that I've seen recently where that didn't happen was the Calzaghe vs Hopkins fight, but hey Hopkins is a sore loser.

That's what I like about boxing, two opponents can try and knock ten bells out of one another but at the end of it all they acknowledge and congratulate one another which is true sportsmanship. What little fights I've seen in the UFC this seems to be missing, which is a shame.

  11. The boxer is not allowed to help the fallen opponent maybe because while the referee is counting, he will check and make sure if the boxer is OK. It could distract the referee if the other boxer will interfere by helping the other to stand up. But anyway, any boxer who did like that showed that they are really a sportsman which is good.

  12. i think Jake LaMotta held a fighter up so he wouldn't fall in a fight he was trying to lose.
