Question:

Boxing without ever participating in a match?

I've barely worked out or exercised in my life. I really want to get into shape but it's hard to motivate by just exercising myself. There's no fitness gym near where I live but there's a boxing gym nearby.

In addition to getting into shape, I want to try something new like boxing too.

But, my question is, are there normally people that do boxing but never participate in matches? I only want to do it for self-benefits and don't really want to box with anyone in general. Do boxing gyms that actually send people out to matches have participants that do not ever compete?

  7. you can go to any boxing gym to get fit......you dont have to enter competitions if you dont want to.... i play football but i go boxing just to keep fit all year round

  8. First you must get yourself into shape.  A boxer's routine is probably one of the most rigorous of all athletes other than triathlon. You must run and run long.  You must skip rope, do push ups & crunches, work on the speed bag and seriously pound the heavy bag.  There is shadow boxing.  If there is a trainer at the gym and I am sure there will be he will help you with technique.  Within 6 months of hard work you may find you want to get inside the ring and move about.  Again your trainer will help you,  letting you punch into his hands, talking to you about sideways movement,  the various punches, keeping your hands high.  It all leads up to sparring, but only when you are ready for it.  No one wants to to box with "anyone in general " or anyone in particular when they dont know how to do so.  Boxing is the "Sweet Science" and the ART of Self Defence!!!

  9. You can absolutely join a boxing gym without having to compete!  The reasons you listed for wanting to do it are good ones!

Boxing and the associated workouts will really get you into good shape.  And you will meet new people.  And you will feel motivated and have a lot of fun!  Your muscular and cardiovascular strength and endurance will go up, as well as your physical confidence!  Most boxing or MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) gyms have a positive atmosphere of inclusion and respect--if that is not the case, you have walked into one that is the exception not the rule and you should go find a different one.

I definitely encourage you to go and give it a try.  A good boxing or MMA gym will welcome you right off the street and let you start learning, both from instructors and other students.  And you will improve your self defense skills as well.  How far you take it, whether it's for fitness, competition, fun, self-defense, or a mix of all, is up to you.  If possible, get into a Mixed Martial Arts gym, because these include grappling and wrestling, and these are really great activities too, for the same reasons.

Good luck and let me know if you have any questions.

  10. you will never know until you go ask. talk to the trainer and tell him about what you would like to get out of boxing but that you don't wish to compete or spar. btw even if you don't intend to compete going to a real boxing gym will be best b/c anything less than that can leave you with bad habits or possibly teach you the wrong things
