Boy Scouts: Is This a Good Idea?

Question

I am a patrol leader in my troop, and since the SPL and the ASPL asked me to take over the meeting for them, I was wondering if, since it's the last meeting of the year before troop elections, we should have an end-of-year party instead. We were going to do the requirement for 10 plants and animals, but that can be done relatively quickly and the meeting is 1 1/2 hours long. I figured we could order pizza, watch TV, play mafia or capture the flag or something, since it's the end of the year. Am I being to lax? Too casual? Is this a bad idea? I just figured it would be nice for everyone to have a break since it was the last meeting and there isn't much left to do except Troop Elections, Scoutmaster Conferences and Boards of Review. If you need me to clarify, please ask. I thank you in advance.

            yes it is a good idea, i myself ,i was in the girl guide ,when i was young for many years .

As SPL I always had a party planned or other fun activity. It made things fresh and the Scouts really appreciated when the leaders and everyone were able to chill and hang out with them.

I think its a great idea.  I am the SPL of my troop.  We usually do fun stuff like this often.  Just last Monday, we fried up some fish.   Yeah, it would be fun.  We play steal the bacon.  We just line up into two teams, use a neckerchief as a flag.  Everyone has a number, if your number is called, you try to get the flag back past your line.  If you get tagged though, the other team gets the point.  Dont know what mafia is, but we play CTF on camp-outs all the time.  But yeah, go for it.  Maybe get ice cream.

One of the hardest things in scouting is to keep things fresh and interesting. By having the necessary activities and then allowing them to have a fun, controlled party, you let them know that there are rewards and consequences. You can't do it too often, but it can make for a refreshing change of pace. Keep on having ideas that are "outside the box" and check them over carefully before execution. Good Luck!

Sure.

It will be good for the young one.

To rough themselves out in the woods and picnic under the sun, moon and stars, even on cloudy and rainy days too.

Giving them a real lessons on survival in the real world.

Learning about the plants, trees and insect with camp-fire in doing their own washing and cooking too.

Not at home mom has to do everything for them in time.

Learn how to stand own their own two feets in time.
