Boy dies after being hit by golf ball in New Townards
A 16-year-old boy, Craig Woods of New Townards died in a golf accident on Monday, after being hit by a golf ball at the Blackwood golf centre in Clandeboye.
Craig Woods was left on a life support machine after he was struck by the golf ball on his head. The teenager became part of the horrific accident in July and after spending ten months on artificial medium of life, he gave up the
fight.
According to witnesses, Woods was practicing on the range with his brother Connor Woods when the accident took place. Connor was hitting a tee shot, when Craig came in between the ball and the fairway. According to the details,
the teen who was a football player, was returning from the fairway after retrieving his ball that he came between the target and was hit in the head. The massive jerk caused swelling in the brain and later became the cause of his death.
Similar statement was given by Connor, who said, “I had just taken a shot and heard a metal ping sound. I asked him [Craig] if the ball had hit him but he said he was fine. I went to sit him down but he refused. It appeared to
me that he was having some sort of fit.”
Connor added that the deceased went in a state of shock after few minutes and was rushed to the hospital, where he was treated for acute subdural haematoma.
Deceased’s doctor, Dr. Brian Herron from Royal Victoria Hospital verified the cause of death and explained to the press that the hospital had received several hit-by-a-golf-ball cases in the past and mostly the ball caused an injury,
but not death. This case was one of the rare accidents in which the patient died after the blow.
Environmental health officer, Gordon McMillen urged the players in the county to be careful while playing and asked them to take precautionary measures before stepping onto the course.
This is not the first time when a person has died because of lack of negligence on behalf of the players and the Golf Club management. The management of all such clubs should take every precautionary measure needed to avoid these
kinds of accidents in the future, or else golf will be deprived of fresh talent like Craig Woods.
