Question:

Boyfriend's family and their {intact} dogs.?

My boyfriend's family lives on a ranch and they have several border collies who are not fixed. One of them just had puppies today and she is maybe a year old, possibly younger and there is a large possibility that the puppies are inbred. I keep telling them to take the dogs and get them all fixed, but whenever I suggest it, my boyfriend always says that they are too busy with other things and to get off of his back about it. I don't know what to do about this because I live 5 hours away and can't just go down there and take the dogs to get fixed myself. Any ideas? I believe they are trying to get rid of some of the dogs, so would calling a shelter to come get them do any good?

  1. DEMAND they have those dogs fixed.  Calling the shelter is a start but most of the time if the dogs aren't adopted they are put down.   It's healthier for the dogs to be fixed also.  Gather as much information as you can about spaying and nuetering give it to him.    Girl...if he' s that dumb...dump him !  Sounds like you've got your head on straight !!

  2. Maybe you can go over for a week, and get their dogs fixed; you know, like a mini vacation for you, and..you get to help..

Yes, calling the shelter would be GREAT.

Kudos to you for being concerned ! :D

  3. There isn't much you can do other than suggest taking the animals in yourself if they pay. Unless there is a mandatory spay and neuter law where they are there is nothing you or anyone else can do if the animals are otherwise taken care of and provided for.

calling the shelter won't do any good if they plan on selling the dog or taking them in themselves to the shelter.

  4. Which is more important to you the dogs or your bf. Because if you call a shelter he will probably dump you.

  5. I think the problem with most of the answers here is that these people are obviously city/suburban people that don't understand that the mentality on a ranch toward animals is completely different from their own.

As Rayven said, the ranchers doing anything illegal which, like it or not, makes it so the shelter can't just seize their dogs. Calling the humane society would just waste everyone's time and get the author in hot water with her boyfriend.

These dogs are not being abused, as the author has clearly pointed out, and they are living the life a border collie was bred to live and loving it.

The problem is that they need to home some dogs and find a solution to the breeding problem.

There are travelling veterinarians, certainly around ranches. I don't know if they are capable of neutering male dogs on site or not. I know they do it with male cats, but don't know the specifics of it. It's possible. The females can't be spayed on site, however, the operation is too invasive. Check superpages.com or google and get the numbers for some vets and ask.

Unfortunately, I don't think there is a solution if someone isn't willing to take the dogs in to have them spayed. Is there any way you could talk them into not having female dogs?

There is a birth control pill for dogs. I know it sounds silly and it's still fairly new. Talk to a vet when you call. I have no idea on the expense of them.

Last but not least, I found a whole bunch of no kill shelters.

Adult borders are going to have a hard time adjusting to anywhere that isn't very active with lots to do unless they are very old. The puppies will have to be placed carefully because of their energy level and need for mental stimulation.

  6. Call the shelter right away

  7. Well, You could offer to take them to get fixed as long as they pay for it. A shelter won't take the dog unless they are be abused. Sorry I don't know what else to say.
