Boyfriend has a student visa, can he visit me during the summer?

My boyfriend is half mexican, half german (not sure if this matters) and we'd like to see each other once during the summer while we're apart. I visited him once in germany so he hoped to fly to the US and visit me for a few days here. Would this even be possible? Since he is not currently attending classes would this be in violation to his student visa even if it was for only a weekend?

Actually his nationality matters a lot. German citizens do not need a visa to visit the USA as a tourist (for up to 90 days under the Visa Waiver Program), but Mexican citizens need either a visa or a valid "Border Crossing Card" to enter the USA at all.
