Brabham may return to F1 – Formula 1 news
Brabham Formula 1 team may return to the sport in the new future, if the legal issues regarding the rights of its name are resolved.
The British car racing team was founded in 1960 by two Australians, Sir Jack Brabham and Ron Tauranac. It will be important to mention that it is known as one of the most successful teams in the history of F1 as it won two constructors’ and four drivers’
world championships during its 30 years.
Furthermore, Brabham has been the only driver who has won the drivers’ title in 1966 with the car with his own name.
During 1960s, Brabham was the largest manufacturer of open wheel racing cars which were sold to the customer teams. Besides, Brabham cars also won championships in Formula Three and Formula Two.
Moreover, the famous car manufacturer also introduced some very innovatively designed vehicles which mainly include ‘fan car’.
In 1960, Brabham raced under the stewardship of Bernie Ecclestone who is now the chief executive officer of F1.
In 2009, Formtech, a German automotive supply company, filed an official request to take part in the 2010 F1 season after claiming the ownership of Brabham’s name.
On the other hand, the Brabham family challenged the claim in the court. Even though, the case has not been finalised, but Brabham’s son David has expressed that there is a strong possibility that they may come back to F1 with their original name.
“Right now this is a very sensitive issue,” he told Totalrace. “But, yes, there is the possibility to bring the team back (to F1).”
In addition, he said that they are trying their best to get the issues resolved in the court and have been quite successful in that. He also said that they are just waiting to get full clearance about their name rights in order to return to the sport.
“For now, we have a predicament behind the scenes, involving the rights of the name. It's 98 per cent resolved, and when it is 100 per cent we'll see what we can do,” he added.
Let’s see whether Brabham will be able to return to F1 in the coming years or not.
