Question:

Braces/Dental surgery issue?

Alright, so about a month or so ago I got my wisdom teeth and four other teeth pulled [a total of eight]. I had braces before that, but not a full set. Now I have a full set, and a few days ago I just got them tightened..They were sore but that usually doesn't bother me, so I went on eating the way I normally do after they weren't as tender. I had some crackers and stuff that wasn't exactly the softest food, but it didn't hurt so I wasn't worried. Last night, I found a small bump on my jaw, near where my wisdom teeth used to be, and this morning it was swollen. I'm worried that it's either a complication [some late issue] with having the teeth pulled, but I'd like to think that I just ate hard food too early. Any idea what's going on? Or maybe something similar happened to you guys?

  1. I would go back to the dentist/oral surgeon and have them check (probably dentist would be quicker), as bump could be normal healing or could be an infection coming through to the surface.  Even if the bumps "bursts" (sometimes they do this, like a pimple), it may make it go away for a while, but unless you get rid of the source of the infection, if WILL come back.  Having your braces tightened should have nothing to do with it, but eating food like crackers that can break apart into little bits and fall into the healing areas is not a good idea.  Get it looked at, and flush the area with warm salt water every time after you eat anything to keep it clean!

  2. Sounds like a swollen lymph node....might be a bit of infection.....you should call the dentist office....
