  1. sometimes when they tighten it, it gets really sore (not always) to the point where it's impossible to eat certain foods... just eat soft foods for those few days (it sucks, I KNOW).

    don't forget to floss everyday....

other than that, braces are easy...

  2. I had braces from October 2006 until February this year.

I've never been happier smiling for aaaaages!

Okay, first of all, when are you getting them put in?

Brush with whitening, day and night, for a week before getting the braces on because you don't want yellowy patches underneath the brackets on your teeth when they come off.

    Also, go for silver elastics.

Some dentists will say that they have a different strength to the elastic that you actually need and, if they do, go for white.

The silver don't change colour at all, maybe slightly but it is not visible, and so you can eat anything.

With the white ones, try not to eat curry or anything that would have a colouring powder in it. I'm indian so was unfortunate enough to be eating an indian meal every day while I had my braces (my nan cooked for us) so my elastics would turn a yellowy orange after a good month or so. I always went to get them changed, though. That's the up side - You can always get them changed whenever you like.

It doesn't even matter if you DO eat it. It just depends on how comfortable you are with yourself when the white turns slightly yellow.

Even pink elastics go orange, blue go green (You don't want that!!!) and stay away from yellow or black ones. You don't want to look like a hick.

Coloured elastics are very over-rated and make your teeth look odd. My friend had purple and blue elastics, once. Purple, blue, purple, blue soon because pink, green, pink, green - and not a nice colour pink either!!! More muddy and dishy washy.

Honestly, stick to the whites or silvers and you'll be fine.

EDIT* - Also, whenever your feel a slight pain in your front teeth after getting it tightened at the dentists, just eat things like soup and bread or mashed potato. Incorporate something hard in with it too as well so that your teeth get used to chewing food while also straightening out. Things like crisps or a biscuit will be good. I LOOOVED baby rusks when I had them in. None of those foods will affect the colouring of your braces either.

Also, keep brushing with whitening throughout your time with braces and also 2 weeks after getting them off.

And ALWAYS wear your retainer after you get the tracks off. This will help you, trust me. I lost mine the other week and had to get a new one and actually did feel my teeth moving back into place which I didn't want. But they're fine now that I have my retainer.

    I hope all goes well.

Remember, don't worry about the slight pain you get when the braces get tightened. It's all part of the experience...and the process to perfect teeth!

  3. The colors are up to you, it depends which colors you like. I'd recommend eating a big meal before you get them on since they will be sore as h**l. You probably won't be able to eat the first day. They should give you pamphlets with everything you need to know in them. The first couple days, stick with soft foods like jello, pudding, soups, pasta, etc. After a few days you should be able to eat solid foods. Take Tylenol for any pain you have. Every ones teeth are different so you'll have to talk to your orthodontist about the maximum amount of time you'll be wearing them. I only had mine for 20 months.

Oh, and don't think your teeth will hurt that bad each time you get your braces adjusted. The first week is the worst simply because you aren't used to having big chunks of metal glued to your teeth, pushing them around.

+Make sure you floss and brush your teeth regularly so they aren't stained when you get them off. It's a good idea to at least rinse your mouth out after eating so you aren't walking around with food stuck in them. It wouldn't be a bad idea to floss really well before they are put on either.

  4. it will be very sore to eat so eat soft foods like rice or pasta. take nurofen. it depends on your teeth for how long they stay in for. pink is my favourite

  5. The dentist will tell you all the important stuff

but go for bright pink or purple

those are the only 2 colours i had

    :D

  6. choose colours you like. i had pink purple blue as i like those colours. once you have them you will have pain for a while, just take paracetamol. at first eat soft foods or soup because otherwise it will hurt. if you want to eat something like an apple you must chop it up into small pieces. stay away from junk food for a bit while you mouth get's used to it. an hour after i had mine one of them popped off and i never even ate anything lol. you have them depending on how your teeth are. i had mine for 1-2 yrs but i liked having them and now i have straight teeth so it's all good. hope this helps hun and good luck =)

  7. firstly, good luck! even though it may seem like they are just an annoyance, the end result is well worth the wait!

    colours:

you should steer clear from greens, yellows, whites and black. these colours make it look like you have stuff stuck in your teeth! go for a bright colour, like pink or purple, or blue - if you don't want to look to garish, paler versions of the above will work.

    what not to eat:

you shouldn't eat chewy sweets, like toffees while you have your braces on,or anything that could dislodge the brace, such as hard boiled sweets.

you dentist will cover the medication part.

    what to eat just afterwards:

smoothies, soups, soft foods like bread.

how long to they stay on for:

depends completely on your teeth, but i think the average is 4-6 weeks.

  8. Choose pale colours, as these will be less obvious (when i had mine done i asked for white but I was told that was not stocked anymore as it stained easily, so i went for pale pink)

Don't eat hard foods like apples, carrots etc... (you are not supposed to eat these at all but I do and my brace hasn't broke. Don't within the first month - it will be too painful)

    Take ibuprofen

Eat soft foods, mash potato, chocolate (let it melt), ice-cream etc...

I have known people to have them on for 5 years, this is very rare though, your orthadontist/dentist should give you a rough idea of how long they will be on for - it depends on the state of your teeth.
