Question:

Braces and surgery now or later?

My son has an under bite and needs dental braces. The dentist says that he should get braces later, until he is 17 or 18. He is 14 right now. She says that the braces will make the under bite more distinguished. The insurance company says that they will pay for 1 installment of braces and one surgery. If i make my son get braces now, he will have them for 2 years then need them again before the jaw surgery. What should i do? Should i install the braces now, and then pay for them for surgery, or wait to install them until the surgery? I really want his teeth straight, though. Thank you.

  1. It's best to get braces early. Ask the company about the jaw surgery.

  2. I say it's better for him to have his braces now. I'm 13 and I've had mine since August 2007 and I finished wearing them in February and even though it's longer for your son I say you should get him to wear his braces now because wearing braces when he's older might affect his life

  3. Jaw surgery should never be done until the person is finished growing as growing could cause the surgery have to be repeated. If you get the braces on now he will have to have them until he is finished growing. If you can afford to get the braces on to straighten them now you could do that but the surgery will have to wait.

  4. I would get a 2nd opinion from another orthodontist.

Lots of things need to be discussed before making such a decision.

You need to know the pros and cons or doing now verses doing later.
