The 53-year-old former http://www.senore.com/Cricket/New-Zealand-c754 cricketer was the coach of the county between 1999 and 2003. His six-year-long coaching stint with the county saw the Gladiators winning five One-Day trophies.
After leaving the county in 2003, the former Kiwi player returned home to coach the New Zealand cricket team. His stint with the Black Caps saw the side performing well in ODI cricket, as they reached the semi-final of the World
Cup in 2007. However, their Test record was not impressive during his tenure.
The former New Zealand batsman stepped down as the national team's coach in 2008 and returned to Nevil Road in 2009 as Director of Cricket.
Speaking to media reporters after signing the contract extension, the Gloucestershire Director of Cricket said that he has committed his next three years to the county to nourish the young squad at Nevil Road.
"At a time when we have lost a good deal of experience in our playing squad I felt it was a good time to solidify the coaching side," said John Bracewell, who played 41 Tests and 53 One Day Internationals for the Kiwis between 1980
and 1990.
"During the next three years the squad will mature...I enjoy working with young cricketers and the ones here at the moment have excellent skills and energy to build upon," he added further.
Rex Body, the Gloucestershire Chairman, expressed his delight over Bracewell’s contract extension. He said that the county management was very keen to have the New Zealander at Nevil Road for another couple of years, and this will
help groom the young talented squad.
"We were really keen for John to keep working with the talented and improving players we have at the club. The team did really well in the County Championship last summer,” said Rex Body, conceding that a lot of improvement is still
needed in first-class cricket.
