Brad Childress offensive coach at Cleveland Browns, expected to boost team’s attack – NFL News
After a day of speculations and rumours, the Cleveland Browns, on Friday, January 27, 2012, confirmed to have hired Brad Childress as an offensive co-ordinator to work under reign of their head coach, Pat Shurmur.
Childress appointment has come in recommendation from Shurmur who knows Childress from their seven-year co-stay at their former team, the Philadelphia Eagles.
Shurmur had been performing the role of an offensive coach and calling plays in addition to his duties as the head coach of Browns.
The head coach said that having an offensive coach on the sidelines will make his job easier and allow him to focus on some of the issues, which he had been ignoring earlier.
"I think what it will do is allow me to just step back and look down one some things in some areas that I may be able to contribute more," Shurmur said. "That's a key piece."
Browns have had many problems in calling plays without an offensive co-ordinator in the side, and at many occasions, this had led to some lapses and controversies putting them at a disadvantaged position. The situation is expected to improve with the new
coach in place.
Confirmation of the appointment of Childress as an offensive coach at Browns has come after speculations and rumours a day earlier that he was the main prospect for the team, which as in hunt of an assistant coaching staff.
Reports in some sections of media have hinted at the possibility of Shurmur being interested to have his former colleague besides him on the sidelines. Shurmur has worked with Childress as a quarterbacks coach at Eagles for seven consecutive seasons.
The new coach is expected to take charge of the offensive duties in the near future. The terms of his deal with Browns were not made public by the team management.
Childress availability is expected to boost the Cleveland Browns’ offensive line-up, which has not been very impressive through out the 2011 National Football League (NFL) regular season.
It may particularly help their young quarterback, Colt McCoy, if he is able to recover from his concussion and return to the side to play football next season.
McCoy had come under fire due to his below-the-mark performance, which to some extent owed to the absence of an offensive coach at Browns.
None of the officials at Browns have touched the subject of McCoy’s recovery and rejoining the squad at any point in the offseason. This has led to doubts that he may not be on Browns’ radar anymore.
It could be a possibility that having a fulltime offensive coach might prompt Browns management to search for a better offensive attack, taking on board a new quarterback.
Browns finished the 2011 NFL season with the dismal record of 4-12. They aim to improve it to secure a better position on the league’s points table next year.
