Brad Childress tipped leading prospects for offensive coaching role at Cleveland Browns – NFL News
The Cleveland Browns are expected to have in place a full-time offensive co-ordinator in coming few days and he is tipped to be the Minnesota Vikings’ former coach, Brad Childress.
Childress was reported to have been short-listed, by Browns, along with Mike Sherman, and with Sherman pursuing the possibility of accepting a similar role at the Miami Dolphins, Childress has all cleared to assume the role an assistant coach at the team.
He will be working under the reign of Browns’ head coach, Pat Shurmur, who knows Childress since the times of his stay at the Philadelphia Eagles as a quarterbacks coach from 2003 to 2005. Childress was Eagles’ offensive coach then.
Reports in some sections of media have hinted at the possibility of Browns landing a contract to Childress by end of this week, with his formal unveiling left for the week after.
Brad Childress was fired by Vikings following their ending of the 2009 season with the score of 3-7 points despite that his performance had been the main spotlight in their success a year earlier. He sat out the entire 2010 season.
The appointment of an offensive coach will make the job of Browns’ head coach easier. In addition to his main coaching responsibilities, Shurmur had also performed the offensive coach’s role while calling his plays during the 2011 National Football League
(NFL) season.
Shurmur was in first season as a head coach at the team and with added strength of his junior staff team he is expected to bring about more improvements in their performance.
Browns finished the 2011 NFL regular season with four wins and massive 12 losses. It was first year of the team with their new head coach and Shurmur apparently got away with the possibility of becoming a scapegoat of the Browns’ poor performance.
The team’s offence was rated 29th on the NFL by measurement of maximum yards they had managed during the season and 30th by the margin of points per game.
With the overhauling of the side through hiring firing, Browns management is aiming for a better performance in the next season.
A contribution from the head coach and new offensive co-ordinator towards solution of the issue pertaining to their quarterback, Colts McCoy’s recovery from concussion and return to the side next season will assume greater importance in the final decision
of their team.
McCoy was injured in Browns’ game against the Pittsburgh Steelers after having come into a helmet-to-face mask contact with Steelers’ linebacker, James Harrison.
He has not played a game or practiced since then. His team has so far been silent on the issue of his recovery and return to play for them in the 2012 NFL regular season.
