Brad Fritsch takes the share of the lead at the Utah Championship Presented by Utah Sports Commission
Canadian Brad Fritsch scrambled to a seven-under par 64 to take a share of the lead after round one of the Utah Championship, presented by Utah Sports Commission, on Thursday, July 12, 2012.
Fritsch opened his account with a birdie on the very first hole that he played. Yet, it did not shatter his confidence and he never looked back thereafter.
Through 15 holes, he managed to record five birdies to go four-under for the round. He then turned his good round into a great round when he fired three birdies in a row to end the day.
It was his lowest score for a round since he fired a nine-under par 62 in Chitimacha Louisiana Open’s final round to take the share of the fifth position on the leaderboard.
"We were walking down the 16th fairway, and my caddie was babbling, saying, 'We're not going to birdie the par-5 because we never birdie the par-5,'" Fritsch said. "I just said I wanted three putts added on the last three holes".
Fritsch is currently having a mixed experience on the Web.com Tour, as he recorded three top-10 finishes, along with six missed cuts in 13 events that he has played so far during the 2012 golf season. He came to Utah with two missed cuts in a row and three
over the last four events.
"The season has been weird for me. I usually make a lot of cuts," he said. "It either seems I top-10 or miss the cut this year".
In addition to the Chitimacha Louisiana Open, he tied for the fifth position at the BMW Charity Pro-Am too — the best finishes of his career.
He is now in a great position to further improve his track record on the tour with a maiden victory of his career.
Doug LaBelle II and Morgan Hoffmann were the other two players who matched his score to take the share of the lead at the Willow Creek Country Club.
Jason Allred took the sole fourth position on the leaderboard after recording an impressive six-under par 65. He scored eight birdies against two bogeys in total.
