Brad Penny’s seven innings shut-out helps Detroit Tigers defeat Chicago White Sox 9-0 – MLB Update
The Detroit Tigers’ starter Brad Penny had a remarkable day with ball, as he tossed seven shut-out innings in the Club’s 9-0 victory over league rivals the Chicago White Sox at the Tigers Stadium on Saturday, April 23.
Penny entered the mound impressively and shined throughout the game. The right-hand hurler allowed just one scoreless hit and two walks while getting three strike-outs. Despite having a splendid outing, Penny was not content with his performance as he said
to reporters after the game.
“I still don’t think I would’ve thrown a no-hitter,” Penny said. “My pitch count was getting up there. I’m sure I would’ve given up a hit at some point.”
Penny might have gotten a no-hitter if the official scorer Ron Klienfelter did not turn the error into a hit after watching a replay.
“My decision is based on my understanding and application of ordinary effort,” Kleinfelter said 45 minutes after the game. “Based on that, I stand by my call. It was a base hit. Pure and simple.”
The Tigers’ reliever Ryan Perry relieved Penny in the eighth inning and performed as per the expectations of the manager Jim Leyland. Perry pitched one inning and made two strike-outs without allowing any run. Closer Alburquerque, who pitched one inning
for a perfect save, gave the same kind of performance.
On the other hand, the White Sox starter Edwin Jackson had a nightmare when he ended his spell with twelve hits and eight runs. The right-hand pitcher, starting his third game, was scoreless in first three innings but lost the momentum in the fourth inning.
He started the fourth with a strike-out, but immediately allowed a walk and then the Tigers’ slugger Ryan Raburn drove in the first run of the game. Jackson began to show signs of trouble with his pitches. The Tigers did not stop as Alexi Avila added an
RBI double, Brandon Inge, and Magglio Ordonez got an RBI single each to pile up a five-run lead over the opponents.
After pitching a shut-out fifth inning, the right-hand pitcher Jackson again went wobbly and allowed three more runs. Miguel Cabrera started the three-run sixth with an RBI single and Ryan participated again with an RBI single to post a 8-0 lead. Ryan added
a third RBI single in the eighth inning, this time off reliever Jeff Grey.
Over all, Jackson pitched five innings, allowed eight out of twelve hits, walked four and gave seven earned runs. It also gave him another defeat in Major League Baseball and now has a 2-2 record with a 4.88 ERA.
