Brad Richards makes donation to Queen Elizabeth Hospital
Dallas Stars forward Brad Richards made a sizeable charitable donation to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital over the weekend in an effort to help children in Prince Edward Island – his home
province. The donation is believed to be $500,000, which will be devoted to the hospitals paediatric unit. Richards was able to make the donation in person following the Dallas Stars’ training camp, which was being held in Charlottetown, PEI.
The Queen Elizabeth Hospital Foundation also announced the commencement of a Brad Richards named endowment. This establishment will help the hospital purchase medical equipment to help
better care for the children.
"It is an exciting announcement for our Island hospital and, most importantly, the children and families the hospital serves," says Allan Morse, Chair of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Foundation.
Richards had long planned to give back to his community and in particular to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Richards made the donation in honour of his cousin Jamie Reynolds, who Richards
said was also his best friend. Reynolds passed away from a brain tumour when he and Richards were young children in 1989. Reynolds was only seven years old at the time of his death and Richards was eight.
"It's a great day for Prince Edward Island. The kindness Brad Richards has shown today is incredible and his gift will have a tremendous impact on our hospital for many years to come,"
says Morse. "PEI is definitely a hockey province and we are extremely proud of Brad's many hockey accomplishments. For him to make a gift where he got his first start in his career means so much."
During the ceremonies, Richards was accompanied by several family members as well as members from the Reynolds family and many paediatric nurses who had helped care for Jamie.
"I chose the hospital because I knew it was the charity that would have the largest impact on the most Island children," says Richards. "I had a great childhood playing hockey in rinks
throughout the Island, so this is a small ‘thank you' to all Island families."
