Bradley Wiggins eyeing the Tirreno-Adriatico debut in the season ahead
Bradley Wiggins has shown interest towards riding the Tirreno-Adriatico in his build-up for the Giro d’Italia 2013.
It will be Wiggins’ debut appearance at the Italian race and he believes that the route between Tyrrhenian and Adriatic will definitely help him for the first Grand Tour race of the season.
L'Equipe and Gazzetta dello Sport reported the Spanish website Biciciclismo as saying that the cyclist will kick-off his 2013 season at the Volta ao Algarve and will skip the Paris-Nice to ensure his Tirreno-Adriatico participation, before finally heading
towards Spain for Volta a Catalunya 2013.
However, it is not the first alteration in the Brits 2013 racing schedule as he also hinted to race both the Giro d’Italia and the Tour de France in the season, having said previously to forgo the French race.
"I've always wanted to win a second Tour. I'm the defending champion. I want to try and win the Giro d'Italia and win the Tour de France behind it. People say it can't be done, winning two Tours. So let's have a go at it," the Guardian reported
Wiggins as saying.
Bradley was exceptional this year as he claimed the Olympics gold as well as an overall victory at the Tour de France 2012 and entered the history books.
He became the first ever British cyclist to bag an overall victory at the French Grand Tour after superb planning by his Team Sky General Manager David Brailsford.
While talking to BBC, Brailsford stated noted that he was pleased to hear Bradley’s attempt to mark a Giro-Tour double in 2013 but also stated that his legs will be tested.
"I was thrilled that [Wiggins has] got his appetite back. He's hungry and he wants it again".
"It's a problem I relish and we'll assess it as we get closer".
"We've certainly got some plans now, and as we move through the season, we'll use evidence and results as we move along," he concluded.
Only seven riders have done the Giro-Tour double including Fausto Coppi: 1949, 1952; Jacques Anquetil: 1964; Eddy Merckx: 1970, 1972, 1974; Bernard Hinault: 1982, 1985; Stephen Roche: 1987; Miguel Indurain: 1992, 1993; and Marco Pantani: 1998.
