Bradley Wiggins helped Team Sky with the stage 19 win at the Tour de France 2012
Bradley Wiggins of Team Sky Procycling is having a terrific Tour de France after his stage winning performance right from the start of the three-week event.
The cyclist succeeded during the Individual Time Trial stage 9 of the race and has secured his second Tour stage win during the 53.5 kilometre stage 19 of the race.
He crossed the 53.5 kilometre stage in a quickest time of 1 hour, 4 minutes and 13 seconds and built up a lead of over one minute on his team-mate Christopher Froome.
Luis Leon Sanchez of Team Rabobank, Peter Velits of Team Omega Pharma-Quick Step and Richie Porte and Sky Procycling occupied the third, the fourth and the fifth positions respectively.
“I knew I was on it when I went down the start ramp,” he noted.
“In the last 15-20k I knew what my advantage was and I was thinking about my wife and kids, my mum, all of the people who’ve helped me get to where I am…”
“I know it sounds cheesy but I was thinking about the fact that I’ve spent my whole life working to get to this point – this is the defining moment. It’s all been summed up today”.
Team Sky General Manager David Brailsford appreciated Wiggins’ performance and cited that the cyclist rode exceptionally well and he is not very far away from an overall victory now.
“We’re taking it one day at a time, we can start thinking about winning this race barring accidents,” he noted.
Bradley and Wiggins dominated both the first (14 km) and the second (30.5 km) first and the second sprints of the race.
Patrick Gretsch, Tejay van Garderen, Rein Taaramae, Daniel Oss and Anthony Oss were the best five young cyclists during the race.
Wiggins has now extended his overall lead to 3 minutes and 12 seconds after the stage 19 classifications.
Christopher Froome is holding the second spot while Vincenzo Nibali, Jurgen Van Den Broeck and Tejay van Garderen occupies the third, the fourth and the fifth positions in the respective order.
Peter Sagan of team Liquigas-Cannondale leads the point’s classifications with Andre Greipel, Matthew Harley Goss, Mark Cavendish and Edvald Boasson Hagen holding the next four spots in the respective order.
