Bradley Wiggins is delighted with Team Sky’s dazzling performance in the young season
Team Sky is enjoying a terrific start to its 2012 campaign. Edvald Boasson Hagen brought the first win of the season after claiming the Sprint Classifications at the Santos Tour Down Under.
Mark Cavendish helped the side with the third and the fifth stage wins at the Tour of Qatar 2012, while Bradley Wiggins claimed the fifth stage of the Volta ao Algarve.
Wiggins applauded the terrific performance by Team Sky. He told British Cycling, “We won three stages, Richie took the overall, Edvald claimed the white jersey and I was third on GC so it was a brilliant week for us all”.
Richie Porte bagged the overall win at the Volta ao Algarve, along with the stage 3 win to his credit.
Hagen grabbed the second stage of the event alongside topping the points classifications to seal a perfect week for the team.
Wiggins noted, “It obviously went better than we'd all anticipated and it was great to start the season off that way; not only individually but as a team too - I think the way we rode together made us the dominant force”.
The team signed as many as eight cyclists for the new season, namely, Mark Cavendish, Salvatore Puccio, Sergio Henao, Luke Rowe, Richie Porte, Danny Pate, Kanstantsin Sivtsov and Bernhard Eisel.
Wiggins joined Team Sky in 2010 and is keen to continue his third consecutive season with the side.
He claimed the first overall position at the Criterium du Dauphine 2011 and also bagged the third overall position at the Vuelta a Espana 2011.
Wiggins is considered as one of the best time trial specialists and has represented Great Britain at the Olympics on numerous occasions.
Despite the fact that 2012 is an Olympic year, Wiggins will concentrate on the road racing as the individual pursuit is not a part of Olympics any more.
However, Great Britain’s Coach Rod Ellingworth hinted earlier that the 31-year-old might compete in the Olympic Road Race and Time Trials in the season ahead.
David Brailsford is delighted with the team’s performance and he is certain that the team will continue its winning momentum for the season ahead, especially at the Grand Tours.
