Bradley Wiggins is eyeing the overall classifications at the Paris-Nice 2012
Bradley Wiggins of Team Sky is looking good to claim the overall spot during the Paris-Nice 2012. The cyclist is currently leading the overall classifications after the second stage.
He started off the race brilliantly and finished second during the opening 9.4 kilometre time trial.
Wiggins finished one second behind the stage leader, Gustav Larsson, with Levi Leipheimer at the third position.
The British cyclist rode carefully during the first stage and he is targeting the overall classifications at the second UCI World Tour event of the year.
He told BBC, "I didn't take any risks in the corners but I knew in a straight line I was flying. I wasn't willing to find out whether it was slippery so I never really pushed it as hard as I could have done in the corners".
The 31-year-old finished 11th during the second stage of the race and strengthened his lead on the overall classifications.
He stated, "I'd already slipped on the ramp coming off the start, so straight away I had one mind on safety in the corners. Fortunately there weren't so many corners so it wasn't as decisive".
Tom Boonen of Team Omega Pharma-Quick Step succeeded during stage 2, while Jose Joaquin Rojas, John Degenkolb, Sep Vanmarcke and Francesco Gavazzi achieved the second, third, fourth and fifth positions in the respective order.
He is now leading the overall classifications with a healthy margin of 6 seconds over Levi Leipheimer. Tom Boonen is further one second behind at the third position.
Wiggins joined the British Team Sky in 2010, and is happy to continue his third consecutive season with the team.
Bradley opened his winning account at the Volta ao Algarve after succeeding at the fifth stage of the race.
He rode brilliantly during the race and claimed the third overall spot after the final general classifications.
Wiggins is now looking ahead to continue his overall lead for the coming stages of the French race.
He is eyeing the top podium spot during the final day of racing at the 2012 edition of the Paris-Nice to grab his first overall victory of the season.
